COPD & Alpha-1

“Since most of our lifetime is spent indoors, continued elimination of potential indoor environmental hazards is essential for our long term respiratory well-being.”

- Dr. Anthony Campagna, Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Lahey Clinic

What are COPD & Alpha1?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, refractory (non-reversible) asthma, and some forms of bronchiectasis. COPD affects over 24 million Americans and is the third leading cause of death in the United States.

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic condition passed from parents to children. Alpha-1 may result in serious lung disease in adults and/or liver disease at any age.

Risk Factors for COPD

  • Susceptibility genes
  • Exposure to inhaled particles:
    • Tobacco smoke (active and passive)
    • Occupational dusts, organic and inorganic
    • Indoor air pollution from heating and cooking
with biomass in poorly ventilated dwellings
    • Outdoor air pollution
  • Female gender
  • Age
  • Respiratory infections
  • Poor lung growth and development
  • Oxidative stress
  • Poor nutrition
  • Low socioeconomic status
  • Comorbidities

Cumulative exposure to noxious particles is the key risk factor for COPD

Breathe Easier in Your Home

The quality of the air in your home can have a major impact on how well you breathe. If you are living with COPD or Alpha-1, your lungs are compromised, making it harder for them to get the oxygen they need. To compensate, you breathe harder, causing your lungs to take in more airborne particles than normal. These contaminants cause increased inflammation and irritation in your lungs, making it even harder to breathe. This vicious cycle is hard to stop unless you take control over the quality of the air you breathe.

Live Better With COPD or Alpha-1

When your lungs don’t get enough oxygen, your energy level suffers, as does your overall health. Removing the airborne contaminants that irritate your lungs can help you breathe easier. ICON customers have reported living more enjoyable lives, having more energy, and sleeping better.

EPA

What the EPA Says About Indoor Air

“Studies of human exposure to air pollutants by EPA indicate that indoor levels of pollutants may be 2 to 5 times—and occasionally more than 100 times—higher than outdoor pollutant levels. Indoor air pollutants have been ranked among the top five environmental risks to public health.”

First Breakthrough in Indoor Air Quality in 60 Years

Rather than simply filtering stale air, the ICON features Air Replacement Technology (ART™), which replaces the toxic air in your home with healthy air. The ICON is the world’s first device to offer ART™ Technology in a compact and portable unit with the power to deliver clean, fresh, healthy air to your entire home.

ICON Unit

How does the ICON Reduce 100% of All Types of Airborne Pollutants?

The ICON uses ART™ (Air Replacement Technology), L-FAST™(Laminar Flow Air Sterilization Technology), and the highest quality HEPA filter to reduce 100% of all types of airborne pollutants. The ICON is the only system in the world that combines these technologies to provide you and your family with the healthiest indoor air to breathe.

#1 Portable Clean Air Delivery Device on the Market

Using a proprietary process, the ICON delivers healthy air to your home that is 99.999% pure. This revolutionary process allows the ICON to deliver the highest quality air of any portable system on the market today.

How Does the ICON Achieve 99.999% Air Purity?

Ordinary air purifiers use 60-year-old technology that allows many small particles to slip through their systems. The ICON uses Laminar Flow Air Sterilization Technology (LFAST) and ultrafine HEPA filters to deliver cleaner air to your home than can be produced by any ordinary air purifier on the market.

EPA Fact

“Exposure to particles can lead to a variety of serious health effects. The largest particles do not get very far into the lungs, so they tend to cause fewer harmful health effects. Coarse and fine particles pose the greatest problems because they can get deep into the lungs, and some may even get into the bloodstream.”

Why the Smallest Particles Are the Most Harmful

The smallest particles, missed by ordinary air purifiers, are also the most damaging to your lungs. These tiny particles are easily inhaled and penetrate deep into your lungs, causing infections and increased inflammation. If your lungs are already compromised, the effects of these contaminants are magnified, leading to difficulty breathing and even dependence on an oxygen tank. Our customers have reported that they are breathing easier since installing their ICON. Some customers who were using oxygen tanks or concentrators have been able to use less oxygen than before.

Happy ICON Customer Breathing Easier

“Since I have been using the ICON, I am using less oxygen and I am feeling much better. I am using a lower liter flow than a few months back. I am having fewer bad breathing days. On a recent visit to my pulmonologist, I told him about the ICON. He was very impressed with the system and technology it uses. In addition, he saw improvement in my condition. He indicated that my lungs had improved air flow and the actual results of my Pulmonary Function Tests had improved. Not only am I subjectively feeling better but my actual test results have improved as well. I’m very happy with the ICON.”

Where Do These Indoor Contaminants Come From?

Harmful agents in the home, according to the COPD Foundation of America, include:

Fumes: These typically originate in the kitchen, bathroom, workroom or garage, from unvented kerosene heaters, gas heaters, and construction or building materials. Specific building materials include formaldehyde from particle board, fiberboard, hardwood, plywood, wall panelling, textiles, carpets and carpet padding.

Aerosolized products: These include deodorants, hair sprays, perfumes, air fresheners and spray disinfectants.

Household cleaning and insecticide products: These include ammonia-based products, petroleum-based products, oven cleaners, bleach, spray furniture polish, bug sprays, paint prays, and mildew remover sprays.

Dust and dirt: These build up quickly and cause breathing problems.

Smoke: From fireplaces, wood burning stoves and stove tops.

Bacteria, mold and mildew: These can build up in moist, damp, dark areas of your home. These areas include bathrooms, kitchens, basements, garages, and humidifying and dehumidifying units.
